State of Education in Rural Punjab

The two-day seminar on “The State of School Education in Rural Punjab” organized by the Institute of Sikh Studies at its premises in Chandigarh on October 1-2, 2006, culminated in the passing of a resolution for setting up a Committee of educational experts for preparing a memorandum to be submitted to the Government of Punjab to take urgent steps to revamp the School Education System in Punjab; to ask the International Sikh Confederation to create a Sikh Education Fund to the tune of One Billion dollars to empower the needy and meritorious Sikh students with the best educational tools and opportunities; to appreciate the Akal Academies’ work in the field of rural education and expand their network of school level academics in the whole state of Punjab rather than diversifying their efforts in to higher level university education in the state of Himachal; admiration of Tughalwal model of School-College integrated programme at Riarki in Distt Gurdaspur (Punjab) and the Institute’s plan to start crash courses in Communication and IT skills.

The copy of resolution passed, the draft of the memorandum prepared by the expert Committee, and submitted to Govt of Punjab together with papers presented in the seminar, are printed for perusal by our discerning readers and to record the Institute’s serious efforts to rejuvenate the vital sector of school education in Punjab.
