PREFACE

GAJINDAR SINGH

The subject of the attributes and achievements of Guru Gobind Singh is such that it inspires ordinary people as well as the scholars, generation after generation, to imbibe his lofty spirit, to follow in his glorious traditions and wonder at his many spangled personality.

The seminar hosted by the Institute of Sikh Studies on November 27 and 28, 2010, drew the attention of the academicians and researchers from far and wide and their contributions are gratefully placed in this tome for reference and further study.

With deep reverence the scholars have glimpsed into the life of the Tenth Master cherishing his charismatic personality and expressing their wonder at the fast moving, action packed bachitra natak of his short sojourn, the many facets of his activities and his glorious achievements. It is as difficult to grasp, in full measure, the whole spectrum of his life’s work as trying to glance at the brilliance of sun with the naked eye.

The seminar hosted by the Institute of Sikh Studies on November 27 and 28, 2010, drew the attention of the academicians and researchers from far and wide and their contributions are gratefully placed in this tome for reference and further study.

The seminar was inaugurated by the distinguished Vice-chancellor, Dr. Jaspal Singh, of Punjabi University, Patiala, and presided over by the well known historian, Dr. J. S. Grewal. The guests were welcomed by S. Pritam Singh Kohli, I.A.S.(Retd.) the President of the Institute of Sikh Studies, Chandigarh and honoured by our patron S. Gurdev Singh, I.A.S. (Retd). The seminar enabled the erudite audience to clarify many intelligent points raised in the seminar.

The seminar was brilliantly organised by tireless efforts of many months of Sardar Gurcharan Singh Sethi, the Convenor, and ably assisted by Sh. Jaswant Rai.

The Ode penned by Bhai Nand Lal Goya, the leading Court poet and the beloved Sikh of the Master, remains the timeless and eternal master-piece par excellence.
